IRVINE, Calif. – Iowa State (1-1) notched its first win of the 2019 campaign on Sunday, taking down UC Irvine (0-2) on the road at Anteater Stadium. The Cyclones were sparked to victory by redshirt freshman Kenady Adams' goal in the 69th minute, assisted by Mira Emma.
Turning Point of the Game
The Cyclones earned a number of high-quality scoring opportunities, but were unable to convert early thanks, in part, to a phenomenal one-on-one save by Anteater goalkeeper Glo Hinojosa after ISU junior forward Tavin Hays had broken down the UCI back line. However, Adams would later make a timely break on a perfect ball played forward by Emma in the 69th minute, and the freshman-to-redshirt freshman connection proved to be the difference. Adams gathered the ball while streaking behind the 'Eaters defense, and buried it in the back of the net.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Kenady Adams. There was plenty of credit to go around in what was a complete team effort. Junior goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg collected the fifth shutout of her career, aided by an excellent defensive performace.
However, it was Adams' moment of brilliance that lifted the Cyclones to their first win of the season. The native of Fort Collins, Colo., collected the first goal of her ISU career, and first Cyclone Game Ball.
Coach Speak
"Irvine is a really good team," said head coach Tony Minatta. "They're going to be one of the top four teams in the Big West. We started off really slow. The conditions were tough and Sunday games are always hard, but our young players really grew up today. This was the first Friday-Sunday match they've had with that kind of heat and that quality of opponent. To come out to California and get the 1-1 split is good for us. A well-deserved shutout. We really worked hard defensively and did what we needed to do to win."
