FORT WORTH, Texas – Iowa State (1-3-0) dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 12 TCU (2-0-1) on Friday night at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. The Cyclones controlled the pace of play for much of the second half, and out-shot the Horned Frogs 9-3 after intermission, but were unable to rally past unbeaten TCU.
Kenady Adams fired a career-high five shots to lead the Cyclone attack, followed by four shots from Courtney Powell, but Iowa State was unable to find the back of the net against a stingy TCU defense. The Horned Frogs have yet to surrender a goal in three matches this season.
Turning Point of the Game
Unfortunately for the Cyclones, it was a foul called inside the 18-yard box that ended up being the difference on the scoreboard in Friday night's match. TCU's Yazmeen Ryan drew a foul call just inside the box in the 29th minute to earn a penalty kick. Ryan took the PK and drove her shot into the bottom left corner of the goal, giving the Horned Frogs a 1-0 advantage.
Cyclone goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz made a strong, diving effort to get her fingertips on the shot, but it was just out of reach. It was the second time in three weeks that a penalty kick ended up being the difference between the Cyclones and a top-15 opponent.
Iowa State came out with purpose and flipped the script in the second half, putting TCU on its heels for much of the period. The Horned Frogs were held to just three shot attempts in the second half, after tallying 15 in the first 45 minutes of action. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz ended the night with four saves.
Coach Speak
"We didn't follow the game plan in the first half," said head coach Matt Fannon. "We're on our heels in all the wrong moments. We didn't battle hard enough and went into our shell. Once we regrouped we came out and absolutely dominated the second half, but we have to win the big moments."
Game Notes
