NORMAN, Okla. – Sophomore Mira Emma scored a game-winning goal in the 65th minute to propel Iowa State to a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma on Friday at John Crain Field. The Cyclones put together a hard-fought 90 minutes of soccer to leave Norman with their first Big 12 road win since Oct. 21, 2018 (at Oklahoma State).
Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz, backed by a stout defensive effort from her Cyclone teammates, was another highlight for the Cardinal and Gold. Silkowitz tallied five saves en route to her first clean sheet of the season, turning away the Sooner offense time and again.
Turning Point of the Game
The play of the match was undoubtedly Mira Emma's game-winning goal off a corner kick in the 65th minute. The Cyclones, who out-cornered the Sooners 4-3 on the night, made the most of the opportunity. Emma, a midfielder from Wheaton, Illinois, played a perfect, bending ball right around the near corner and right in front of the goal. Sooner goalkeeper Nikki Panas was able to get a hand on it, but Emma's shot found the back of the net to push the Cyclones in front, 1-0.
Emma's corner was not her only offensive contribution of the night. She did a little bit of everything for the Cyclones, including setting career-highs with four shot attempts and three shots on goal.
The momentum from the go-ahead goal buoyed the Cyclones through the rest of regulation, holding off a desperate Sooner offensive attack to come away victorious.
Coach Speak
"We were so happy with the way our women's worked in training this week after we were so disappointed with last week's result," said head coach Matt Fannon. "The commitment to improve and keep growing has been fantastic. They were all excellent again tonight and deserved the win."
