AMES, Iowa – For the second-straight day, Iowa State (2-6) held No. 2 Baylor (9-1) to a season-low hitting percentage, but was unable to come out with a win as the Bears prevailed 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-20) Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum.
Despite holding the Bears to .145 hitting, the Cyclones struggled with just .078 hitting on the afternoon. Leading for ISU was Candelaria Herrera, who had nine kills, while Eleanor Holthaus had eight. Izzy Enna led the back row with 13 digs, while Taylor Baranski had 11. At the net, Herrera and Jenna Brandt each had five blocks.
Making her first career start in her first career match as a Cyclone, redshirt freshman middle Abby Greiman had four kills on six swings and three blocks.
Set One: Baylor 25 Iowa State 22
A tight first half of the set played out, but the Cyclone offense was strong to push ahead 13-9, hitting .421 up to that point and capping the run. In her first career action as a Cyclone, Abby Greiman got her first career kill on her first career swing on the first rally of the match. Baylor quickly bounced back, tying the set at 13-13 and obtaining its first lead at 18-17 when Holthaus shot wide. ISU was able to get ahead again at 22-21 when Brandt and Herrera combined to block Yossiana Pressley, but BU rattled off the final four points of the set, getting back-to-back blocks to close the set at 25-22.
Set Two: Baylor 25 Iowa State 20
Baylor libero Shanel Bramschreiber served up a strong 6-0 run to put the Bears ahead 6-2 early, but ISU knotted it at 6-6 moments later. Baylor was able to hold a small edge throughout the set, but it was not until Bramschreiber's next trip behind the service line that they were able to get some breathing room, moving ahead 17-13. There was not a path back for ISU with Kara McGhee notching five kills on seven swings in the set to go with three blocks to help guide the way for Baylor. Bramschreiber aced via the net cord to claim the second 25-20.
Set Three: Baylor 25 Iowa State 20
Pressley's 5-0 run behind the service line, capped off with a back-row kill from the defending National Player of the Year, pushed Baylor ahead 8-4. Iowa State was down 13-7, but the Bears were their own worst enemy, as four-straight attack errors welcomed ISU back into the set at 13-11. Both teams posted strong blocking efforts in the final frame, with ISU getting 3.0 blocks and BU 4.0. ISU got within one at 20-21 when Greiman and Annie Hatch combined to deny setter Callie Williams, but Baylor racked up the last four points of the set to close out the set and the match.
