AMES, Iowa - After an unexpected weekend off last weekend, the Iowa State volleyball team returns to competition this weekend at West Virginia. The matches at WVU Coliseum will be Friday at 5 p.m. Central and Saturday at 3 p.m. Central.
Both matches will be streamed live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. For more information about Big 12 Now on ESPN+, click here. Live stats for both matches will be provided by West Virginia, here.
Iowa State was last in action on Oct. 23-24 against then-No. 2 Baylor at Hilton Coliseum. Despite BU leaving Ames with a pair of 3-0 wins, there were encouraging signs for the Cyclones, with ISU holding Baylor to its two lowest hitting percentages of the season. The Cyclone block was strong across the weekend, combining for 12.5 total blocks across the two matches, while Izzy Enna had 29 digs across the duals.
West Virginia has been the surprise package of the Big 12 in 2020, entering the weekend with a 5-5 record on the season after being picked to finish ninth prior to the season. WVU, who was ranked for the first time in program history last week at No. 15, are led by Second Team All-Big 12 middle Briana Lynch, who gets her 2.30 kills per set at a team-best .348 hitting percentage, while leading the front row with 1.05 blocks per set. On the pins, Natalia Petrova leads the team with 2.84 kills per set, while Kristin Lux posts 2.56 kills per set.
Iowa State has dominated the series with West Virginia since the Mountaineers joined the Big 12 in 2012, winning all 16 meetings including 11 sweeps. The closest call in the series did come at the WVU Coliseum in 2016, with Iowa State winning in five sets after holding off four West Virginia match points in the fifth set. Both of last season's meetings were sweeps for the Cyclones, with last year's win in Morgantown being the 300th career win for Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch. Annie Hatch combined for 28 kills across the two meetings vs. WVU last season.
