MORGANTOWN, West Virginia – Despite a crazy third-set comeback, Iowa State (2-7) was unable to complete its rally as they fell to West Virginia (6-5) 3-2 (25-21, 25-15, 25-27, 11-25, 15-10) Friday night at WVU Coliseum.
After dropping the first two sets, ISU found itself down 24-18 in the third before fighting off six match points to keep the match going. Iowa State dominated the fourth to push it to five, but
Leading ISU in defeat was Candelaria Herrera, who had 11 kills at .304 hitting and six blocks, with Eleanor Holthaus joining her in double figures with 12. Izzy Enna guided the back row with 20 digs, while Piper Mauck had a double-double of 28 assists and 12 digs.
Set One: West Virginia 25 Iowa State 21
West Virginia's block caused Iowa State problems early, as a pair of stuffs helped put the Mountaineers ahead 5-2. Candelaria Herrera's first shift on the floor helped bring ISU back, as she got a trio of early kills and Annie Hatch's first visit behind the service line produced a 4-0 run that put the visitors ahead 9-7. WVU fired off a 4-0 run of their own to retake the lead at 12-10, which ended up being enough of a gap. ISU was able to tie it at 15-15 on a Hatch kill, but WVU went on a 4-1 run to move ahead for good. The home team held the Cyclones to .114 hitting and locked up the first with Kristin Lux kill at 25-21.
Set Two: West Virginia 25 Iowa State 15
A collection of five Iowa State errors helped WVU move out to a 7-0 lead to begin the set. The Cyclones struggled to find the momentum needed to get in the set, as WVU got ahead by double figures at 14-4. The closest it would get for the visitors would be seven points, as the Cyclone attack was held to .000 hitting for the frame. Skye Stokes made it 2-0 for the Mountaineers with a kill at 25-15.
Set Three: Iowa State 27 West Virginia 25
Iowa State finally got the lead, with Herrera proving to be a spark on both sides of the ball, getting a pair of blocks and kill to help ISU ahead 7-5. The Mountaineers struck back with a 6-0 run to get ahead 11-7, but the Cyclones were able to lock in and levelled it again at 16-16 on another Herrera kill. However, Iowa State stalled out again as WVU pulled away with a 5-0 run to get ahead 21-16. Down to match point at 24-18, ISU had a furious comeback, with Brooke Andersen getting consecutive kills to tie the set at 24-24. WVU fired wide to give ISU a set point at 25-24, which the home team was able to fight off. Holthaus powered a kill to give Iowa State another chance, which ISU got when Briana Lynch was called in the net at 27-25.
Set Four: Iowa State 25 West Virginia 11
The Cyclones broke a knotted set open with a 6-0 run, with Alexis Engelbrecht contributing a pair of kills and a block in the process, to push out to a 13-7 lead. The Iowa State offense finally got rolling, with Piper Mauck at the controls and setting the visitors to .393 hitting in the fourth. The Iowa State block also had a field day, notching 5.0 total blocks in the set while holding WVU to -.128 hitting in the frame. It was Herrera again who put the finishing touches, as her solo stuff of Stokes forced a fifth set at 25-11.
Set Five: West Virginia 15 Iowa State 10
After trading around the first collection of points, it was West Virginia first to get some breathing room, running off three-straight to move ahead 7-4 with a Lux kill capping it off. Herrera helped settle things down with a kill, but WVU went on another 3-0 run to get ahead 10-5 on another kill from Lux. Iowa State had another fight back left, as they rode a pair of Mountaineer attack errors to get within two at 10-8. The Mountaineer block stepped up to close proceedings, as consecutive stuffs of ISU pushed them back ahead by five at 13-8. WVU wrapped up the match when Natalia Petrova killed at 15-10.
