MORGANTOWN, West Virginia – Another rough night for the Iowa State (2-8) offense saw the Cyclones fall to West Virginia (7-5) 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-16) Saturday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.
Izzy Enna led Iowa State with 15 digs, becoming the 17th player in Iowa State history to reach 1,000 career digs. Piper Mauck had another double-double of 28 assists and 12 digs. The Cyclone attack was led by Eleanor Holthaus' nine kills.
Set One: West Virginia 25 Iowa State 20
An uneven first set broke in favor of the Mountaineers, who were able to work their way ahead at 11-7 when Brooke Andersen was blocked by Audrey Adams and Natalia Petrova. ISU worked back within one at 14-13 on a kill from Herrera. Iowa State fell behind by three at 18-15, but was able to work back within one at 19-18 on a WVU attack error. However, the Cyclones were unable to get the set even or ahead, as the ISU attack was held to .059 hitting in the frame with the home side notching 3.0 total blocks. Briana Lynch and Emmy Ogogor combined to block Andersen to wrap up the first at 25-20.
Set Two: West Virginia 25 Iowa State 22
Iowa State found themselves in a 3-0 hole to start the set, but were able to battle back to tie it at 4-4 and to take the lead at 6-5. A 3-0 run which included a Herrera ace helped give the Cyclones a three-point edge at 10-7. The Mountaineers were able to battle back, as Adams served up a 5-0 run that put them back in charge at 14-12. Michal Schuler, in her first weekend back in the lineup after an injury, frustrated the Mountaineers with her back row attack, which she utilized twice to even the set, the second time at 18-18. Hatch tip-rolled over the block to put ISU back ahead at 20-19, but Kristin Lux's back-to-back kills put the home side ahead again. Lux caused problems for ISU all set, as she notched seven kills in the frame. Her seventh kill put WVU ahead for good at 23-22, as they locked up the set when Hatch was stuffed by Lynch and Ogogor at 25-22.
Set Three: West Virginia 25 Iowa State 16
Another slow start hampered ISU, as the Cyclones dropped four of the first five points of the frame. The Cyclone attack continued to have their struggles, as the Mountaineers were able to build their way to a 10-5 lead. ISU climbed out of the hole well, going on a 3-0 run out of the timeout to get within a pair at 10-8. Herrera killed to cut it to one at 13-12, but the WVU attack got back to work to get ahead again by five at 17-12 on a Skye Stokes ace. There would be no big rally late this time, as the Cyclones got called for four contacts at 25-16.
