AMES, Iowa – A back-and-forth battle at Hilton Coliseum did not go Iowa State's (2-9) way as Kansas (3-8) took a 2-hour 47-minute marathon 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 17-15) Friday night.
Iowa State's All-Big 12 middle blocker Candelaria Herrera was dominant, posting an ISU career-high 20 kills at .375 hitting. She led four Cyclones in double figures, with Annie Hatch notching 13 and Brooke Andersen and Eleanor Holthaus having 10 each. Izzy Enna recorded a career-high 27 digs to lead the back row, while Andersen had a double-double with 15 digs.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Kansas 23
Iowa State dominated the early potion of the first set, racking up seven of the first eight points of the match, capped by a Brooke Andersen ace, and running out to a 12-4 advantage. Kansas chipped away from there, using a 4-0 run to get within three at 14-11 and a 3-0 run later to get back within a point at 18-17. Iowa State never lost the lead in the set, as the Cyclones hit .250 and were able to hold KU to .114 hitting in the process. Kansas had a late stand by fighting off three Cyclone set points, but Andersen was able to wrap it up with her fifth kill of the frame at 25-23.
Set Two: Kansas 25 Iowa State 20
A back-and-forth battle ensued as both teams traded mini runs throughout the first half of the set to keep each other in check and honest. As a whole, the set and 10 ties and five lead changes. Iowa State got the first breakthrough, as Izzy Enna served up a 4-0 run to push ISU ahead 13-11, but Kansas was able to battle back and move back ahead at 17-16 on a Jenny Mosser ace. The Kansas offense picked it up from there, with the Jayhawks committing no attack errors and hitting .379 on the frame. They also had a pair of aces, with Ayah Elnady's coming at set point at 25-20.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 Kansas 22
Kansas got the breakthrough in the third, as two Elnady kills powered a 4-0 run that put the visitors ahead 9-5. Iowa State took advantage of three-straight Kansas errors to pull back within one at 12-11, but it was not until a mistimed set from Elise McGhie at 20-20 that the Cyclones were able to tie it up. From there, it was the Candelaria Herrera show, as the Argentine notched kills on three of ISU's final four points of the set, a frame which saw her record seven kills. Her kill gave the Cyclones the lead at 23-22, and another one wrapped up the set at 25-22.
Set Four: Kansas 25 Iowa State 19
The Jayhawks ran out to a big lead, moving ahead 9-3 via a 6-1 run early on. Iowa State's block helped them get back into things, with Abby Greiman and Eleanor Holthaus combining for a stuff of Karli Schmidt to get within one at 11-10. Herrera killed again to tie it at 14-14, but Iowa State never got ahead, as Kansas went on a 3-0 run to re-establish its lead and force a fifth set. The Jayhawk serve continued to frustrate Iowa State, as KU fired three aces in the set, the final one on set point from Lacey Angello, to force a fifth at 25-19.
Set Five: Kansas 17 Iowa State 15
Both teams went wild with substitutions in the fifth, with Iowa State moving over to a 6-2 offense to improve the block, while KU continued to rotate in fresh serving specialists. The trick worked for ISU early, as the Cyclones held the lead for the majority of the frame and were first to eight with a Herrera kill at 8-6. Iowa State was rolling, with Kenzie Mantz killing to pus ISU up 13-10, but the Cyclones froze up, as a trio of attack errors brought KU to match point at 14-13. Iowa State was able to fight off two match points, but not the third, as Mosser killed from the back-row to give KU the set and the match at 17-15.
