AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (3-9) finally got back in the win column, snapping an eight-match losing skid with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-14) over Kansas (3-9) Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclone offense in particular stepped up in the final two sets, hitting a combined .385 across the final two frames. Leading the offense was Brooke Andersen with 14 kills, while Eleanor Holthaus had 12 kills at .310 hitting and Candelaria Herrera notched 10 kills. The block recorded 13.5 total blocks, with Herrera leading with seven stuffs, Andersen adding six and Holthaus and Abby Greiman notching five each. In the back-row, Izzy Enna had 24 digs, while Holthaus had a double-double with 10 digs.
Set One: Kansas 25 Iowa State 20
Iowa State got off to a fast start, with Izzy Enna serving up a 5-0 run to help push the Cyclones out to a 7-2 lead. KU worked its way back into the set, going from 11-5 down to move ahead at 17-16 on an Ayah Elnady kill. The Cyclones tied it at 18-18 on a Candelaria Herrera kill, but Kansas was able to re-establish its lead with a 4-0 run via a pair of Elnady kills and a block from the KU freshman. The Jayhawks held the Cyclones to .054 hitting with four blocks, and Andersen firing long to wrap up the first at 25-20.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 Kansas 23
The two teams traded 3-0 runs early, with Iowa State coming out of those series with a 9-7 lead. Kansas bounced back, going on a 5-0 run via strong serving by libero Kennedy Farris to push ahead 13-10. ISU's attack continued to struggle, with Kansas scoring seven of its first 15 points via ISU attack errors. The Cyclone offense settled down, with Eleanor Holthaus putting down a couple of kills to get back within one at 15-14. Andersen and Herrera combined for consecutive blocks to get ISU ahead and Herrera then combined with Piper Mauck to give ISU a two-point lead at 19-17. KU reeled ISU back in at each attempt to pull away, bring ISU back level at 20-20 and from 23-21 to 23-23. Holthaus tipped over the block to give ISU first shot at set point, which Annie Hatch converted by finding the KU block's hands at 25-23.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 Kansas 16
Iowa State used a collection of smaller runs to build up its lead in the third frame. A 3-0 run that included a Hatch ace pushed ISU ahead 5-2, and then Michal Schuler killed from the back as part of another 3-0 to make it 8-4 to the home team. KU was within two at 10-8, but the visitors gave ISU a five-point edge via three-straight attack errors. A pair of Herrera kills guided a 4-0 run to make it 17-9, with the Cyclones able to cruise from there. The Cyclone defense, despite recording no blocks in the set, was outstanding, holding KU to .030 hitting with just six kills in the frame. Abby Greiman had three kills on four swings in the set, including the final one to give ISU the set 25-16.
Set Four: Iowa State 25 Kansas 14
Holthaus killed twice on a 3-0 run to give ISU the lead for good, but the Jayhawks were able to hang tough briefly, staying within a point of the Cyclones. Andersen took over during a 5-0 run, notching a pair of kills a block to push ISU ahead 17-10. The fourth frame was one of ISU's best of the night and one of its best in both attack and defense on the season. The ISU hitters notched .455 hitting, with Holthaus having five kills and four each for Andersen and Herrera. The block had 6.0 total blocks, with Greiman recording three block assists, as ISU held the Jayhawks to .053 hitting. Herrera got her 10th and final kill of the night to wrap up the match at 25-14.
Player of the Match
Candelaria Herrera. The Argentine followed up her career-best attacking night on Friday by doing a little bit of everything. She got 10 kills for her sixth effort in double figures this year, while her seven block assists was her second-best blocking effort of 2020. She also tied her season-best with six digs and tied her career high with three aces.

Iowa State will wrap up the fall portion of the schedule at TCU next weekend. Matches at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth will be Friday and Saturday at 5 p.m.
