AMES, Iowa - An unprecedented season closes its first chapter this weekend, as Iowa State will wrap up the fall portion of its schedule at TCU this weekend. The matches at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth will be on Friday and Saturday at 5 p.m.
Both matches will be streamed live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. For more information about Big 12 Now on ESPN+, click here. Live stats for both matches will be provided by TCU, here.
Iowa State went 1-1 in its fall home finale vs. Kansas, dropping a tough five-setter Friday night before bouncing back to snap an eight-match losing skid with a 3-1 win on Saturday. The stars of the weekend were Candelaria Herrera and Izzy Enna. Herrera had the best offensive match of her Iowa State career on Friday, recording 20 kills, her most as a Cyclone, at .375 hitting. On Saturday, the Argentine let her defense do the talking with seven block assists, helping lead a 13.5 total block effort by ISU. Enna, the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, recorded a career-best 27 digs on Friday night and followed that up with 24 on Saturday.
The unprecedented and challenging nature of the 2020 volleyball season has been felt by TCU more than anyone else in the Big 12. The Horned Frogs have only played eight matches so far, going 1-7 in the process and will have three conference series to make up in the spring. The Horned Frogs went 0-2 last weekend at Kansas State, their first matches in four weeks due to covid postponements and their bye weekend.
TCU's attack is led by outside hitter Julia Adams, who averages 3.72 kills per set, while right side Afedo Manyang is recording 3.13 kills per set. The Frogs' libero Dani Dennison was leading the Big 12 in digs per set prior to Enna's outstanding weekend, with Dennison now second at 4.53 digs per set. The TCU block is led by sophomore MyKayla Myers, who averages 0.89 blocks per set.
Iowa State is 13-3 against TCU since the Frogs joined the Big 12 in 2012. This year introduces a new venue, as TCU announced pre-pandemic that Schollmaier Arena, its home for men's and women's basketball, would become its home for volleyball as well. The Cyclones were 6-2 across Stadium Drive at the University Recreation Center. Last season saw the Cyclones pick up a pair of 3-0 wins over TCU, the third time that Iowa State has swept the Frogs twice in the same season. The Cyclones' All-Big 12 stars dominated the Frogs last season. Eleanor Holthaus had 3.17 kills per set at .326 hitting across the two matches, while Candelaria Herrera notched 3.00 kills per set at .531 hitting. In the home match on Oct. 16, 2019, Herrera had 10 kills with no errors on 15 swings, while two weeks later the Argentine had nine total blocks (one solo, eight assists).
