CINCINNATI, Ohio – No. 22 Iowa State (21-5, 11-4 Big 12) took the win at Cincinnati (14-11, 6-9 Big 12) in four sets Wednesday night. Morgan Brandt was stellar as ever, coming one kill shy of a triple-double.
Brandt at setter had 56 assists, averaging 14.00 per set, 11 digs and a career-high nine kills. The star had zero attack errors and held a hitting percentage of .692, also a career high. Brandt solidified her fifth double-double this season, and 31st of her career.
Set scores on the night stood at 25-20, 26-24, 23-25, 25-19 as ISU sealed the fourth Big 12 road win and of 2025. Iowa State now totals eight road wins.
Maya Duckworth hit her first 13 kills without an error and ended the night with 19 at .333 hitting. The senior had her 60th-career 10-plus kill match. Nayeli Ti'a joined Duckworth in double figures also having 19, her third-straight 10-plus match. Ti'a had her fourth double-double as a Cyclone as she continued her dominant defense with 12 digs.
Rachel Van Gorp (13) and Annalise Grant (12) also had double-figure dig nights, with freshman Grant achieving a career high.
SET ONE
Back-to-back kills put ISU up 5-3, but the home team followed with a run of three to take the lead. Iowa State took its own 3-0 run to get the lead back at 8-7, and ISU kept with the advantage at the media timeout (15-12) as setter Brandt struck down a kill. Faith DeRonde sent her fourth kill on as many swings from the back row to put things at 16-13, and Iowa State remained ahead for the opening set win of 25-20.
SET TWO
Brandt tricked the Bearcats to put down her fourth setter kill and tie it at 5s, while similar to the first, the set remained close through the early goings. With the Cyclones ahead 11-9, Tierney Jackson delivered two-straight kills, causing a timeout by Cincinnati. After Duckworth's seventh kill without an error, Cincinnati came back to tie it at 20 on a run of three. Duckworth denied the home team the lead with another kill next, but Cincinnati would get the lead this time at 22-21. Ties came at 22s and 23s, but an ISU service error took UC to set point. Kills by Ti'a and Duckworth then put Iowa State at set point and after a Bearcat timeout Duckworth delivered her 10th, still errorless, to take the set 26-24.
SET THREE
Duckworth kept it going with her third-straight point to get ISU on the board first. Cincinnati kept up with Iowa State, flipping the lead at 6-5 on an ace. Brandt's fifth kill on seven attempts came right after, and Duckworth provided another lead flip next. That lead was not safe, as the Bearcats reached 10 first with ISU two behind. ISU matched UC at 10s and 11s, and the Cyclones strung together a run of four to lead 14-11. Out of the media timeout, ISU had a block and a kill, causing a quick Cincinnati timeout (17-12). Iowa State reached 20 at 20-15, but the host had a late push as ISU called its own timeout at 23-22. Cincinnati sent over two kills to then reach set point, and followed with a block to keep the match going after six-straight points.
SET FOUR
Abbi Brenizer had her third kill on five swings as ISU went up 9-5, leading to a Bearcat timeout. Cincinnati cut its deficit to one (10-9), while Brenizer put down another kill next. Iowa State was the first to 15 as Hendricks-Walker notched kill No. 8, and ISU carried on to make it 19-15 and force a Cincinnati timeout. Brandt hit over her ninth kill, coming one shy of a triple-double at 22-16, and the Cyclones went on to take the road win on a Ti'a kill at 25-19.
