AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State (2-3) battled hard, but was unable to overcome No. 1 Texas (5-0) as the Longhorns won 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-14) Thursday night at the Erwin Center. The two teams will play again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Austin.
The Cyclone attack struggled against the big Texas block, hitting just .133 on the evening. In defeat, the attack was led by Brooke Andersen's nine kills, while Candelaria Herrera got eight kills at .300 hitting. Izzy Enna led the defense with 10 digs.
Set One: Texas 25 Iowa State 19
The Iowa State got off to a strong start offensively, hitting over .400 en route to its first eight kills. However, the Cyclone defense had no answers to the Texas attack, as the No. 1 Longhorns converted 10 of their first 14 swings for kills. ISU also struggled in serve and pass, as UT got a pair of aces to push ahead 15-9. Jenna Brandt's trip behind the service line helped cut the Texas advantage to three at 15-12, and some strong work by the Cyclone defense eventually whittled it down to two at 20-18. However, the home defense also stepped up and was able to get the final points, with Jenna Brandt being called in the net attacking at 25-19.
Set Two: Texas 25 Iowa State 22
Texas flew out to an 8-2 lead, but the Cyclones were able to settle into the set and start to get the attack going, with Annie Hatch in particular doing well to find ways to use the block to help get the Cyclones within a pair at 13-11. ISU was able to get Candelaria Herrera rolling in the middle a bit, as the visitors were able to hang tough at that two-point deficit. Hatch aced to get the Cyclones within one at 21-20, but ISU could never tie it as Texas was able to convert its first set point when Skylar Fields killed at 25-22.
Set Three: Texas 25 Iowa State 14
Some scrappy points broke out, with Texas then taking advantage behind the service line as back-to-back aces helped put them ahead 9-3. While the Cyclone defense was able to work hard to keep Texas off the board, the Cyclone offense was held to its lowest set hitting percentage of the night at .030. The home team was able to take the final four points of the evening, with Brionne Butler killing to wrap up the match at 25-14.
