SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, California – An outdoor track meet in December produced historic marks for a pair of Iowa State stars on the first weekend of the track and field season. Wesley Kiptoo and Cailie Logue put up elite performances at The Track Meet at JSerra High School in California, while the Cyclones opened the indoor track and field season at Kansas State.
The Track Meet
With the pandemic cutting down on opportunities for distance runners to post fast times, the weekend marked a big chance for some of the best in the country and the world, and Iowa State's two champion student-athletes were able to put themselves among the pack.
Kiptoo, making his ISU track debut after an undefeated cross country season, shattered the Cyclones' school record at 10,000 meters, finishing sixth in his second in 27:37.29. Kiptoo consistently churned out 66 and 67-second laps in his performance and was in the lead pack up until the final mile. He brought home his race with a final lap of 63.32.
Though Kiptoo's mark will not count towards NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships qualifying, as the qualifying window does not open until March 1, 2021, his mark shatters ISU's school record in the event, previously Jonah Koech's 28:08.50 from the 1990 Mt. SAC Relays. Kiptoo just missed out on the Olympic Qualifying standard of 27:30.
Logue, running in her first competitive 10K since the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Championships, smashed her PR in the event with a 32:19.37 and moved up to No. 4 in ISU history in the event. Logue's mark also gave her the U.S. Olympic Trials standard in the 10,000m, making her eligible for June 2021's event at Hayward Field. Logue consistently posted 77 and 78-second laps throughout the race, with only her first lap going above 80 seconds. She saved her best for the final 800, clocking her last half-mile in 2:26.43.
K-State Winter Invitational
The Iowa State indoor track and field season began on Saturday at Ahearn Field House with the K-State Winter Invitational. The Cyclone hurdlers and jumpers brought home a pair of victories to open the season.
Iowa State showed that once again its women's hurdles group will be deep. In her ISU debut, Tatiana Aholou got the win in the 60m hurdles in 8.45, edging teammate Katarina Vlahovic, who took second in 8.46. Aholou's mark moved her into No. 7 on ISU's all-time performers list for the event.
Erika Furbeck left her best jump for last, and it was enough to claim the event title in the long jump, posting a best effort of 18-10 1/2 (5.75m) to open the season.
Up Next
Iowa State is done for 2020, and will be back in action on January 9, 2021 at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Kansas State.
