January Student-Athletes Of The Month Announced

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State Office of Student-Athlete Development announced that four Cyclone student-athletes have been honored for their hard work and dedication in the classroom during the month of January. Iowa State's Student-Athletes of the Month are Easton Dean (football), Maddie Frederick (women's basketball), Candelaria Herrera (volleyball) and Eric Steyer (men's basketball).
Easton Dean – Redshirt Freshman (Football)
Hometown:Â Oswego, Kan.
Major:Â Business
Easton Dean is in his first season on campus in Ames as a member of the Iowa State football program. Dean, who redshirted his initial collegiate season, chose Iowa State over offers from Iowa, Kansas State and Kansas out of high school. Dean made the transition to tight end in 2019.
Maddie Frederick – Redshirt Freshman (Women's Basketball)
Hometown:Â Tipp City, Ohio
Major:Â Accounting
Maddie Frederick has appeared in six games so far during the 2019-20 season for the Iowa State women's basketball team. Frederick scored her first collegiate points vs. Texas Southern, knocking down a 3-pointer and a free throw in eight minutes of action. The native of Tipp City, Ohio redshirted her initial season at Iowa State.
Candelaria Herrera – Junior (Volleyball)
Hometown:Â San Juan, Argentina
Major:Â Kinesiology and Health
Herrera had an outstanding junior season for the Cyclones, earning All-Big 12 First Team honors and AVCA All-Midwest Region Team recognition. She was one of the best two-way players in the conference, averaging 2.22 kills per set at a team-best .314 hitting percentage, in addition to 0.94 blocks per frame. Over winter break, Herrera returned to her native Argentina to help the national team qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Eric Steyer – Redshirt Sophomore (Men's Basketball)
Hometown:Â Ames, Iowa
Major:Â Statistics
Eric Steyer, who earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors in 2019, has appeared in six games so far this season for the Cyclone men's basketball team. Steyer knocked down his lone field goal attempt, a 3-pointer vs. Purdue Fort Wayne. Steyer is also a two-time member of the Big 12's Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Student-athlete development staff members who oversee each sport submit nominations, and the staff votes on the monthly winner.
