Maldonado Earns Fourth Big 12 Weekly Honor

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior Andrea Maldonado has been named Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week. Maldonado earned her third 9.950 on floor to win the event title against Michigan State.

Maldonado's award is her third Event Specialist of the Week nod of 2020 and is her fourth Big 12 weekly honor. She is the first Cyclone to earn three Event Specialist of the Week titles in the same season and joins Michelle Shealy as the only other Iowa State gymnast to earn four Big 12 weekly awards in one season.

She has been the Cyclones' top performer on floor this season, racking up the three 9.950s, a 9.925 and a pair of 9.900s to total a 9.925 NQS that is tied for sixth in the nation. The junior split her previous two Event Specialist of the Week honors between extraordinary performances on floor and vault. The first came with her first 9.950 floor score of the year at Georgia. The other came with a 9.925 on her Yurchenko 1.5 vault at Southern Utah.

Maldonado and the No. 20 Cyclones will face-off against rival Iowa in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series at Hilton Coliseum. The meet is set for 6:30 p.m. with carnival games and festivities taking place in the concourse. Students will receive free pizza before the meet.
