AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior Andrea Maldonado has been selected as a Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) First Team All-American on floor, the organization announced Tuesday morning Maldonado earned the status after tying for seventh nationally on floor with a 9.935 national qualifying score (NQS) during the regular season.
The newcomer brought a fire to the Cyclone gymnastics team, anchoring the floor squad on numerous occasions. Her four 9.950s on floor this season is surpassed in the Iowa State records just once; Erin Dethloff hit or bested the mark six times in 2004. Maldonado is Iowa State's first All-American since Caitlin Brown earned Second Team honors on beam at the 2015 NCAA Championships, ISU's first regular season All-American since Camille Santerre-Gervais on bars in 2014 and the first on floor since Janet Anson in 2006. The First Team All-America distinction is earned by having an NQS in the top-eight nationally on an individual apparatus.
On the way to her All-American status, Maldonado earned numerous weekly conference awards, claiming Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week four times and also earning Big 12 Newcomer of the Week twice. She broke out with her first 9.950 in the third meet of 2020 at Georgia. She matched the score for the second time in front of a lot of family at Florida, concluding the year with back-to-back 9.950s at Hilton Coliseum against Michigan State and Iowa.
