TAMPA, Fla. - The Iowa State softball team (11-12) split two games on Saturday of the USF Tournament, earning a 3-1 victory against the UMass Minutewomen (3-6) before falling 4-3 to the Wisconsin Badgers (13-10).
Iowa State 3, UMass 1
Iowa State came out on the winning end of a tightly contested game in the first contest of the day. It was a strong start to the game for pitcher Janessa Jasso, as she allowed one earned run on four hits and two walks. She also tallied 3 strikeouts in the game. Ellie Spelhaug kept the dominating pitching going as she pitched two inning in relief, allowing no earned runs, no hits, no walks, and generated four strikeouts.
It was early offense once again for the Cyclones as Bettendorf, Iowa, native Carli Spelhaug led-off the inning with a base hit to right and then advanced to second on a stolen base. Spelhaug would then come in to score on a UMass fielding miscue, plating her from second and putting senior Sami Williams on third. Williams would be stranded there, and Iowa State would be up 1-0 to end the inning.
The Cyclones kept the base paths busy in the second, as they got runners to first and second with two away in the inning, but they were unable to get them home and kept the Iowa State lead at 1-0.
In the top of the third, the Cyclone infield showed had Jasso's back, as Logan Schaben was able to get the force at second on a UMass sacrifice bunt attempt and then Sami Williams flashed the leader on a diving stop that caught a Minutewomen runner in a run-down between second and third for the second out of the inning.
From that point, the offenses of both teams went quiet until the top of the fifth inning when UMass tied the game on a Kendra Allen home run to right field.
The tie would later be broken by Iowa State in the bottom of the sixth inning, as pinch hitter Sarah Tyree plated both Alesia Ranches and pinch runner Angelica Gonzalez on a single through the right side, giving the Cyclones the 3-1 lead. This would prove to be the difference, as the Cyclones would go on to take the 3-1 victory.
Wisconsin 4, Iowa State 3
The start of game two looked promising for the Cyclones, with both Carli Spelhaug and Sami Williams getting on base to start the first, but they were unable to advance any further and Wisconsin got out of the inning unscathed.
The Badgers were threatening to score in the home half of the second as they were able to get runners to second and third with two outs in the inning, but catcher Mikayla Ramos was able to tag a runner out, who was attempting to come home on a ball that had gotten away, keeping the game scoreless and getting the Cyclones out of the inning.
In the third, Iowa State put the first run of the game on the board as a Ranches single turned into extra-bases, as a Wisconsin throwing error allowed senior Logan Schaben to come around and score all the way from first, putting Iowa State in the lead 1-0.
The lead did not last long, however, as the Badgers would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning on a Jordan Little solo home run to right-center field.
Iowa State would waste no time retaking the lead as junior Skyler Ramos ripped a single to left-center field, which scored Mikayla Ramos from second, giving Iowa State a 2-1 advantage.
The teams would continue to swap runs as Wisconsin would tie the game on a Stephanie Lombardo home run to right. The Badgers would then take the lead on an Iowa State miscue that allowed a runner score from third, giving them a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning.
The Cyclones would keep the offense going, scoring in their third consecutive inning in the top half of the fifth as freshman Carli Spelhaug would blast a game-tying home run to right, making the score 3-3.
In the home half of the inning, Wisconsin would once again re-claim the lead on a double to the gap in right-center field that scored a Badger runner from first.
The offense for both teams would go quiet from that point on and that Badger run would prove to be the deciding factor, giving them the 4-3 victory.
