AMES, Iowa – Iowa State Athletics honored its best in the classroom through a week-long celebration (April 27-May 1) on Cyclones.com and across social media platforms.
Cyclone student-athletes continue to excel in their academic work. In November, the NCAA released its Graduation Success Rate (GSR) data and Iowa State registered its best-ever GSR with a mark of 91 percent. That figure ranked first in the Big 12 and marked the fifth consecutive year the institution's GSR improved.
These high marks were attained thanks to the work and dedication from the Cyclones student-athletes. A total of 365 student-athletes compiled a 3.0 GPA for either spring or fall semesters of 2019 or maintained an cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
The following student-athletes were recognized on the All-Cyclone team for achieving the highest GPA in their respective sports: Eric Steyer (men's basketball), Maddie Frederick (women's basketball), Jeffery Pedersen (men's cross country), Cailie Logue (women's cross country), Charlie Kolar (football-captain), Lachlan Barker (men's golf), Amelia Grohn (women's golf), Ana Palacios (gymnastics), Nicole Martindale (soccer), Sami Williams (softball), Emma Ruehle (swimming & diving), Karen Alvarez (tennis), Thomas Pollard (men's track & field), Bailey Righi (women's track & field), Brooke Andersen (volleyball), and Hank Swalla (wrestling).
Team GPA awards recognized the highest collective team GPA for each of our male and female sports. The highest team GPA for the seventh consecutive year is men's golf (3.53) and for the fifth consecutive year women's cross country (3.69).
The Norm Boyles Award, given annually to a faculty member who has made a sustained contribution to the welfare of Iowa State student-athletes, was presented to Marty Martinez. Martinez is a counselor/psychologist for Iowa State University and a member of the Sports Medicine team in Athletics.
Emma Ruehle (swimming & diving) and Hank Swalla (wrestling) earned Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships from the Big 12 Conference. Each recipient maintained a GPA of 3.2 or greater and will receive $10,000 toward post-graduate education.
Members of the 2019-20 Farm Strong Squad were also recognized: Tyrese Haliburton (men's basketball- co-captain), Baily Righi (women's track & field- co-captain), Madison Wise (women's basketball), Thomas Pollard (men's cross country), Cailie Logue (women's cross country), Marcel Spears Jr. (football), Tripp Kinney (men's golf), Alanna Campbell (women's golf), Sydney Converse (gymnastics), Marin Daniel (soccer), Sami Williams (softball), Anna Andersen (swimming & diving), Maty Cancini (tennis), Roshon Roomes (men's track & field), Bailey Righi (women's track & field), Candelaria Herrera (volleyball) and Chase Straw (wrestling).
The Office of Student-Athlete Development (OSAD) also honored 29 newest members of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society for maintaining a 3.40 or higher cumulative GPA into their junior or senior year: Eric Steyer (men's basketball), Inès Nezerwa (women's basketball), Milo Greder (men's cross country/track & field), Karly Ackley (women's cross country/track & field), Maggie Davis (women's cross country/track & field), Morgan Gigandet (women's cross country/track & field), Alexis Gourrier (women's cross country/track & field), Anna Herriott (women's cross country/track & field), Jacie Legois (women's cross country/track & field), Sarah Leinheiser (women's cross country/track & field), Cailie Logue (women's cross country/track & field), Ben Latusek (football), Lachlan Barker (men's golf), Frank Lindwall (men's golf), Alanna Campbell (women's golf), Merin Mundt (soccer), Bryn Hanrahan (softball), Bryn Ericksen (swimming & diving), Wyli Erlechman (swimming & diving), Martha Haas (swimming & diving), Polina Shynkarenko (swimming & diving), Kennedy Tranel (swimming & diving), Johnathan Gannon (men's track & field), Emily Coghill (women's track & field), Bailey Righi (women's track & field), Enna Izzy (volleyball), Taylan Entriken (wrestling), Dan Eslick (wrestling), and Ryan Leisure (wrestling).
The football (769 total hours) and swimming & diving squad (12.57 hours per member) teams earned the Cyclone Serve team awards for total community service hours accrued and Kat Jones was recognized for her individual service with 63.75 hours.
The Eye of the Storm award is presented to a Cyclone student-athlete who has faced a significant personal challenge or period of adversity in their life. This year's winner was Inès Nezerwa with women's basketball. Nezerwa has confronted every obstacle head-on and weathered the storm to become the strong and resilient person she is today.
The Iowa State Letterwinners Club recognized six Cyclones who have been exceptional representatives of Iowa State in the areas of academics, athletics, leadership, and community outreach. Of these six nominees, and Ray Lima (football) and Sami Williams (softball) were the recipients of the Letterwinner All-Around Awards.
