AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State gymnastics team had an outstanding 2019-20 academic year in the classroom, with 11 student-athletes named Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Scholastic All-Americans on Tuesday.
A pair of Cyclones are now two-time honorees in Laura Burns (who earned the honor in 2017) and Ana Palacios (who was also a recipient last year). The following nine Cyclones earned Scholastic All-America honors for the first time: Sydney Converse, Laura Cooke, Casandra Diaz, Maya Ford, Natalie Horowitz, Madelyn Langkamp, Andrea Maldonado, Ana Palacios, Jade Vella-Wright and Loulou Vezina.
Maldonado, who earned First Team All-America honors on floor exercise in 2020, becomes the fourth Cyclone in program history to earn Scholastic All-America and NCAA/WCGA All-America honors in the same season, joining Caitlin Brown (2015), Michelle Shealy (2013) and Kelli More (2000).
To be eligible to be a Scholastic All-American, student-athletes must maintain a 3.50 or higher grade point average either cumulatively or across the academic year.
The Iowa State gymnastics team was also recognized for its outstanding work as a collective, as the Cyclones were one of 53 programs nationally to have a Team GPA of 3.50 or higher across the 2019-20 academic year, posting a 3.56.
