STILLWATER, Okla. – Iowa State (0-2-0) fell late in a 2-1 heartbreaker to defending Big 12 champion Oklahoma State (2-0-0) on Friday night at OSU's Neal Patterson Stadium. Senior forward Kassi Ginther netted her first goal of the season to give ISU a second-half lead, but the Cyclones would be undone on a controversial play in the game's closing minutes.
Ginther's goal came in the 51st minute, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 lead early in the second half. Sophomore midfielder Mira Emma dribbled the ball into the attacking third and fired a shot at the top of the box. Her shot was blocked by an OSU defender and collected by ISU senior Courtney Powell in front of the net. Powell played the ball back to Ginther, who sent a rocket into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Turning Point of the Game
Oklahoma State scored just moments later in the 54th minute, as Gabriella Coleman converted a one-on-one opportunity to knot the match at 1-1. However, it was a play late in the game that ended up swinging things in favor of the home team.
Olyvia Dowell was awarded a penalty in the 87th minute on a foul called against Iowa State in the box. Starting ISU goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz came up with what looked like the play of the match, stopping the OSU penalty kick, but was called for coming off her line, giving the Cowgirls another chance. Grace Yochum converted the second time around to give OSU the go-ahead goal.
Coach Speak
"Again we find ourselves deserving much more from the game," said head coach Matt Fannon. "To lose in such a controversial way makes this hurt so much more."
Game Notes
- Kassi Ginther's goal in the 51st minute was the fifth of her career, and first since Oct. 21, 2018 at Oklahoma State.
