AMES, Iowa – A golden goal from freshman Olivia Edwards propelled Iowa State (1-2) past Baylor (0-1-2), 2-1, in double overtime on Friday night at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The first win of the Matt Fannon era was a thriller, capped by Edwards' header into the back of the net in the 104th minute.
The first victory of the Fannon era was also Iowa State's first Big 12 win since Oct. 25, 2018 vs. Kansas State, and the program's first win over Baylor since 2016.
The Cyclones were able to strike first on their home pitch, as Kenady Adams collected her first goal of the season in the 14th minute to give ISU the early momentum. Senior Tavin Hays received a pass and tapped it back to leave the ball for Adams, who was streaking down the center of the pitch. The sophomore took a pair of touches and let a shot rip from just beyond the 18-yard box. The chance was placed perfectly beyond the outstretched arms of the BU goalkeeper into the bottom left corner of the goal to put Iowa State in front, 1-0.
Iowa State held off a relentless Baylor offensive attack, aided by an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz, until the Bears knotted the match in the 73rd minute. Chloe Japic connected on a well-struck free kick from just beyond the penalty box to tie the game at 1-1 and eventually send it to overtime.
Turning Point of the Game
The Cyclones earned their first corner kick of the match with the clocking winding down in the second overtime period, and they made the most of it. Sophomore Mira Emma took the corner in the 104th minute and played it perfectly into the center of the box, where senior Kassi Ginther got up to win the ball. Ginther's header was then redirected into the back of the net by Edwards for her first career goal as a Cyclone.
Iowa State's bench rushed the field as the Cyclones celebrated their first overtime win at home since Oct. 18, 2013 vs. Baylor.
