Cyclones Finish Seventh At Big 12 Match Play

HOUSTON – The Iowa State men's golf team placed seventh at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament with a 2-3 record after splitting its two matches on the final day.
Iowa State lost to TCU (4-2) in the morning session before bouncing back with a victory over West Virginia (5-1) in the afternoon's seventh-place match.
The TCU contest was a tight, as three of ISU's four losses were close matches decided on the 18th hole.
Against TCU, Lachlan Barker was victorious over Justin Gums, 4&3. Barker took over the match on the seventh hole by winning three-straight holes. Nate Vance was a 4&2 winner over Thomas Allkins. Vance was 3 up after 13 holes and maintained his cushion until the end.
The Cyclones dominated the final match vs. West Virginia, claiming five matches in a 5-1 victory. Vance finished off the week with a winning mark (3-2) by defeating Kurtis Grant, 4&2.
Barker, Luke Gutschewski, Josh Hetherington and Ricky Costello also won matches vs. the Mountaineers. Gutschewski had a 2-2-1 mark in the tournament, capping off the week by defeating Max Green, 3&2. Gutschewski won the first hole and never trailed in his match.
Costello's match vs. Trent Tipton was all square through 14 holes before the Cyclone won three-straight holes to cruise to a 3&1 victory. Hetherington won the last two holes to claim a victory over Olivier Menard at 2 up.
