AMES, Iowa –  Maddie Crosse has had a long journey throughout her gymnastics career. Despite a major setback, she has persevered and is ready to represent Iowa State this spring.
Crosse was always destined for gymnastics, starting out in mommy and me classes when she was two years old. But she says that her love for the sport started even before then.
"I was in daycare doing forward rolls," said Crosse. "They told my mom she should put me in gymnastics, and I have been doing it ever since. It's been a huge part of my life."
Crosse had a successful junior career, becoming a Level 10 gymnast in 2016. At the 2017 JO National Championships, she placed 11th in the all-around with a score of 37.625. She was forced to sit out the 2018 season with a back injury, but she says the experience has only made her stronger.
"It was a struggle," explained Crosse. "It was difficult, but it taught me so much. I learned a lot of life skills at a young age."
During the recruiting process, Crosse said she felt an immediate connection with the Cyclone coaching staff. She knew that despite the big change in size from her small high school, Iowa State is where she wanted to be.
"I talked to Nilson Medeiros the most throughout the recruiting process," noted Crosse. "It honestly felt like I was just talking to an uncle, there was an immediate connection, and it was a big part of why I chose ISU. I felt so comfortable with everyone, the team, the staff, even the campus."
