WACO, Texas – Iowa State (16-11, 8-8 Big 12) dropped its regular season finale to No. 7 Baylor (18-5, 12-2 Big 12) 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-19) Saturday evening at the Ferrell Center. The BU offense took advantage from there, hitting .307 as a team while holding ISU to .158 hitting.
In defeat, the Cyclones were led by Eleanor Holthaus, who had 12 kills on .286 hitting and eight digs. Marija Popovic led the back row with 12 digs.
Set One: Baylor 25 Iowa State 19
Baylor got off to a fast start, taking six of the first seven points of the match, taking advantage of a trio of ISU errors. The Cyclones got it together with a 3-0 run to get back within one at 7-6 and then evened it up during another 3-0 run that included a pair of Mariah Mitchell kills at 12-12. ISU briefly moved ahead at 14-13 on a Candelaria Herrera kill, but the Bears were able to re-gather and pull away, using a 6-1 run to make it 22-17 and stay ahead for good. Despite a solid defensive effort that held BU to .207 hitting, ISU only hit .034 on the set. Baylor moved ahead 1-0 with a kill from AJ Koele at 25-19.
Set Two: Baylor 25 Iowa State 18
Iowa State was able to take advantage of some early Baylor errors to wrestle ahead 6-5, but the home team was able to settle down and go on a 6-2 run capped by a pair of Lauren Harrison kills to move them ahead 11-8. The Bears went on another 4-0 run that made it 15-9 and embedded the No. 7 team in the country into the lead for the set. While the ISU offense was able to improve to .161 hitting for the set, Baylor countered with .333 hitting on the set. Setter Hannah Sedwick put away a kill to put the Bears ahead 25-18 in the set and 2-0 in the match.
Set Three: Baylor 25 Iowa State 19
Baylor claimed four of the first five points of the set, but Jaden Newsome helped keep ISU in contention, calling her own number twice in as many points. However, there would not be a path into the set or the match for the Cyclones. Once again, despite an improvement in attack, with the visitors hitting .244 in the set, Baylor also improved yet again by hitting .359 in the set and wrapping up the match. The Bears completed the sweep when Marieke van der Mark killed at 25-19.
