AMES, Iowa – Josie Bergstrom fell in love with gymnastics at a young age. Despite having a bit of an unconventional start to her career, she forged a path to Ames ready to compete for the Cardinal and Gold.
Bergstrom began her journey in gymnastics at a rec gym after moving to Iowa at a young age. She trained there for six years before advancing to a gym in Sioux Falls, S.D.
"It started as a way for my family to meet people and get out in the community," said Bergstrom. "I was always flipping around on our trampoline so they thought it would be a good fit. Moving to a higher-level gym I was just in awe; I loved the coaches and being pushed."
While touring college campuses Bergstrom found herself drawn into the culture of the Cyclones. She knew she had found her home.
"I really loved the team and how well they got along," noted Bergstrom. "I loved the opportunities they presented me, whether it be friends, gymnastics, or the school itself. The culture of the team is one of the big things that drew me in."
Although Bergstrom has never gotten the chance to be part of a team environment, she says it is the thing she is most looking forward to this season.
"My senior year of high school I was alone at my gym," remarked Bergstrom. "I never got to be part of a team atmosphere. A big part of college gymnastics is being there for each other and supporting each other, and I'm excited to experience that."
