AMES, Iowa - Iowa State volleyball has a crucial road swing this weekend, as the Cyclone head to Norman and McCasland Field House to take on Oklahoma. Matches will be Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.
Both matches will be televised on the Bally Sports Oklahoma Regional Sports Network. To find out more about BSOK, please contact your cable or satellite provider. Live stats for both matches can be accessed, here.
Iowa State got a 1-1 split against West Virginia last weekend at Hilton Coliseum, taking the first match on Saturday in four sets before falling to WVU in four on Sunday. The Cyclones had some personnel adversity between matches, as Eleanor Holthaus (who had 17 kills on Saturday) and Marija Popovic (27 digs on Saturday) were both ruled out due to Big 12 health and safety protocols. On Sunday, their replacements were both strong, as Mariah Mitchell took advantage of her first extended action on the right side with 12 kills, while Allie Petry had 17 digs in the libero position. Candelaria Herrera had another busy blocking weekend, posting 13 blocks across the weekend including eight in Sunday's match.
Oklahoma is 10-11 overall and 4-6 in Big 12 play, coming off a 1-1 split at Kansas last weekend. The Sooners won the first match on Friday in five sets before KU bounced back to take the second meeting in four on Saturday.
OU have a strong freshman duo who have helped guide the way this season in freshman outside Megan Wilson and setter Peyton Dunn. Wilson, who claimed Big 12 Rookie of the Week last week, leads Oklahoma with 3.76 kills per set which includes a career-high 22 she had in last Friday's OU win over Kansas. Dunn, a three-time Big 12 Rookie of the Week, dishes out 9.67 assists per set and has eight double-doubles on the season. Among the veterans, Savannah Davison, a waiver year transfer from New Mexico State, averages 3.46 kills per set, while redshirt senior middle blocker Paige Anderson is one of the Big 12's top blockers at 1.31 per set and had a combined 15 blocks across the two matches vs. KU last weekend.
This weekend will be the 86th and 87th all-time meetings between Iowa State and Oklahoma, with the Sooners leading the series 45-40. ISU and OU did not meet last season for the first time since 1979, after Covid-19 issues among the teams caused the originally scheduled October doubleheader and rescheduled March doubleheader to be called off. In 2019, the two teams split their meetings by defending their home courts. Iowa State, which is 22-8 against the Sooners under head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch, has had a run of success at McCasland Field House, winning five-straight trips to Norman from 2014-18.
