NORMAN, Oklahoma – It was the Annie Hatch and Candelaria Herrera show at McCasland Field House on Friday night as the duo led Iowa State (14-8, 6-5 Big 12) to a much needed 3-X (23-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-17) win over Oklahoma (10-12, 4-7 Big 12). The Cyclones will look for their first conference sweep since TCU back in September tomorrow at 4 p.m.
Hatch led the ISU offense with one of the best matches of her career, tying her career-high with 18 kills and getting her first double-double of the season with 14 digs. Herrera, the Big 12's leading blocker, let her offense do the talking with 13 kills at .429 hitting. Mariah Mitchell continued her outstanding play in the absence of Eleanor Holthaus with 12 kills at .400 hitting.
Brooke Stonestreet made her first start at libero in place of the absent Marija Popovic and recorded a career-best 18 kills and three service aces. Brooke Andersen joined them in double figures with 11 digs.
Set One: Oklahoma 25 Iowa State 23
Allie Petry served ISU on a 5-0 run to help get the Cyclones ahead early. Oklahoma got back into it from behind the service line, firing two aces to get back ahead at 9-8. Hatch solo block give ISU lead at 11-10. Found Herrera early and often to get ahead by three at 16-13. Oklahoma block posted consecutive stuffs to get ahead 22-20. Herrera held off one set point with a kill but Savannah Davison fired a kill to give the home team the first 25-23.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 Oklahoma 15
A more disciplined Iowa State defense allowed OU to be their own worse enemy, as three Sooner attack errors over the ISU block helped put ISU in front 5-1. The Cyclone attack then did its part, converting their first five shots of the set for kills to help move the visitors ahead 9-3. After being shutout behind the service line in the first, Iowa State also began to pile more pressure from behind the service line, with Brooke Stonestreet firing two aces and Brooke Andersen and Herrera one each in the set. Iowa State's attack hit .522 in the set and tied the match when Jaden Newsome tipped around the block at 25-15, ISU.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 Oklahoma 18
The Cyclones gradually worked ahead by four at 10-6, but OU was able to cut it to one at 10-9 when Hatch fired long. Hatch redeemed herself with a pair of kills in a 3-0 run to rebuild the lead at 13-9. Oklahoma was able to get back within one at 19-18 on a Megan Wilson kill, but Mariah Mitchell stepped up with a pair of kills and a block as the Cyclones claimed the final six points of the set to make it 25-18.
Set Four: Iowa State 25 Oklahoma 17
A tight set was broken open by the serve of Allie Petry and Hatch continued persistence in attack, with the Cyclones going on a 5-0 run that included two Hatch kills making it 16-12. Iowa State's attack had a strong performance, notching .306 hitting while holding the Sooners to just nine kills at .118 hitting for the set. Andersen wrapped up the match when her serve led to a set over the net and out-of-bounds at 25-17.
Player of the Match
Annie Hatch. The Cyclone junior has been slowly making her way back from a concussion sustained in September and Friday night saw her not only have her best match of the season but one of the best of her career. Hatch tied her career-high with 18 kills and also got first double-double of the season with 14 digs. She also recorded three blocks.
