Cyclones Lose Close One To Kansas, 4-3

LAWRENCE, Kansas - Iowa State fell to Kansas, 4-3, on the road Saturday in a non-conference showdown. It was just the second loss of the season for the Cyclones, making their record 7-2. Kansas improves to 4-3 with the win.
The Cyclones fought hard in doubles play but fell short as the Jayhawks took the first point. Miska Kadleckova and Thasaporn Naklo started things off with a 6-4 win at the No. 1 slot, but Kansas responded with their own 6-4 victory at the No. 2 slot. Iowa State was without senior Maty Cancini, but Ellie Murphy filled in admirably with Ting-Pei Chang at the No. 3 slot. They came back to tie their match, 6-6, forcing a tiebreaker, but Kansas ended up pulling away with the win and the doubles point.
Naklo notched another win in singles play by beating Sonia Smagina 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 slot. Kadleckova, who owns the best singles record in the Big 12, improved to 9-0 on the season with a 6-4, 7-6 (1-0) win despite stepping up to the No. 3 slot with Cancini out. Sofia Cabezas also came out with a win, her seventh of the season, after a three-set battle with Tiffany Legarde.
Iowa State returns to action next Saturday when they visit Drake in Des Moines.
