AMES, Iowa - Iowa State tennis will be in Des Moines this weekend as it visits Drake on Saturday. The Cyclones, who earned their highest ever ITA ranking of No. 41 this week, will look to return to the win column following two close losses.
THE SCHEDULE
Saturday, Mar. 6 - 1:00 PM
No. 41 Iowa State (7-2) vs. Drake (4-3)
Matches will be played in the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
THE SERIES
This will be the 58th matchup between the two instate rivals. Drake leads the series 30-27, but Iowa State has won four matches in a row against the Bulldogs, a streak dating back to 2016. Oddly enough, both squads have a winning record against one another on the road. The Cyclones hold an 18-14 record over the Bulldogs in Des Moines.
Last year Iowa State beat Drake 5-2 in Urbandale.
SAIA'S SUCCESS
Head coach Boomer Saia has the Iowa State tennis team hitting its stride. In his short tenure, he, and assistant coach Kenna Kilgo, have led the Cyclones to their top-two ITA rankings in program history. The No. 41 ranking this week bests last season's ranking of No. 48, which was the first in program history.
Saia and Kilgo also helped the Cyclones match the best start in school history this season. Iowa State came out the gates 7-0, which tied the record set by the 1973-74 team.
Saia is already in the company of the best tennis coaches ever at Iowa State. In terms of winning percentage, his .537 mark is tops amongst Cyclone coaches with a minimum of 16 matches.
