AMES, Iowa – Thasaporn Naklo won the decisive third set at No. 1 singles to clinch the win as No. 43 Iowa State beat No. 30 Texas Tech, 4-3, in a thriller Friday afternoon at the Forker Tennis Courts.
The win is Iowa State's first-ever against the Lady Raiders after dropping the first 28 matches in series history. The Cyclones had been 0-10 against Tech at home prior to Friday's win, which improved ISU to 9-4 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 action. Tech falls to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in conference action.
The win was especially sweet for Cyclone coaches Boomer Saia and Kenna Kilgo. Saia came to the Cyclones after serving as an assistant coach for the Lady Raiders, while Kilgo was one of Tech's most decorated players.
"This is a huge win for our program," Saia said. "Our team has worked really hard to get to this point and I couldn't be prouder of this group. Naklo was fantastic down the stretch – we talk a lot about stepping up in big moments and was very proud of her mindset to clinch the match."
With the matched tied at 3-3, Naklo took control in the third set against Lady Raider Lisa Mays and won 6-2 to send the Cyclones into celebration mode. Naklo had won the first set 6-3, but dropped the second 7-6 before coming up big in the clutch.
The Cyclones took a 3-0 lead in the match behind wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, as well as freshmen Miska Kadleckova and Sofia Cabezas' dominant performances at No. 4 and No. 6 singles.
Like all strong programs, the Lady Raiders wouldn't relent as they tied the match at 3-all before Naklo sealed the victory.
Iowa State returns to the courts Sunday as it hosts No. 41 TCU at 10 a.m. The match will be played at the Ames Racquet & Fitness South location.
