AMES, Iowa – The next steps of the season for the No. 20 Iowa State gymnastics team were laid out on Monday afternoon, as the Cyclones were selected for the 2021 NCAA Gymnastics Championship. ISU will begin the Regional rounds in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and will take on hosts and No. 7 Alabama, No. 10 Arkansas and No. 19 Iowa in the Regional Semifinal.
"It is a privilege to be able to take this team the Tuscaloosa Regional," head coach Jay Ronayne said. "I am proud of our accomplishments so far, and I look forward to the ones we can still accomplish this season."
Iowa State has had a historic season, in which they scored the highest team score of head coach Jay Ronayne's tenure on multiple occasions. The Cyclones ended their regular at the Big 12 Championships with a 197.050, tying the seventh highest team score in school history.
Addy De Jesus made an impact right away, being named to the All-Big 12 team on vault, winning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, and tying to win the Big 12 floor title. She also tied the school record for all-around twice and became only the fourth gymnast in ISU history to earn a perfect 10.000. De Jesus is tied for 10th nationally in all-around and on vault.
Iowa State has also seen standout performances from a number of other gymnasts this season. The Cyclones have eight gymnasts with at least one score at or above 9.900. Natalie Horowitz has had two scores of at least 9.900 on the uneven bars and earned Big 12 Co-Event Specialist of the Week on March 3. Makayla Maxwell has had four vaults score at least a 9.900, leaving her ranked 21st nationally on the event.
While the goals for 2021 are still ahead and within reach, the future remains bright for the Cyclones. Iowa State will see almost their entire team return for the 2022 season, with Arianna Orrego, Andrea Maldonado, and Sophia Steinemeyer all taking advantage of the NCAA waiver year.
More information regarding specifics to the NCAA Gymnastics Championship Regional rounds will be posted at a later date.
