AMES, Iowa – For the No. 20 Iowa State gymnastics team it has been a historic season in competition, with the two highest scores of the Jay Ronayne Era being posted in the past two meets. That history-making has extended to the classroom as the Cyclones put a program-record and conference-leading 13 student-athletes on the 2021 Academic All-Big 12 Gymnastics Team, the conference announced Wednesday.
All 13 Cyclones made the First Team, with three making a second-straight appearance on the First Team in Kelsey Boychuk (Marketing), Madelyn Langkamp (Kinesiology and Health) and Natalia Ros Vaquer (Hospitality Management). A fourth, Ariana Orrego (Management Information Systems) earned her second career First Team honor after previously making it in 2019. Two Cyclones, Makayla Maxwell (Kinesiology and Health) and Phoebe Turner (Sociology) earned Second Team honors in 2020, but made the step up to First Team in 2021.
The other seven honorees are all first-time Academic All-Big 12 recipients. Sophomore Laura Cooke (Kinesiology and Health) was one of five Big 12 student-athletes to be nominated with a 4.00 GPA. The other first-time honorees were Loganne Basuel (Kinesiology and Health), Maddie Diab (Pre-Business), Natalie Horowitz (Event Management), Andrea Maldonado (Liberal Studies), Sophia Steinmeyer (Event Management) and Jade Vella-Wright (Liberal Studies).
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
