AMES, Iowa – The No. 33 Iowa State tennis team defeated No. 44 Kansas, 4-1 for its 17th-straight home win and its fourth-straight Big 12 Conference victory.
The Cyclones improved to 12-4 overall and 4-2 in Big 12 action, while Kansas drops to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Iowa State quickly earned the doubles point as the No. 73 duo in the nation of Miska Kadleckova and Thasaporn Naklo cruised to a 6-1 win over Kansas' pair Sonia Smagina and Vasiliki Karvouni at No. 1 singles. At No. 3, senior Maty Cancini and freshman Sofia Cabezas won 6-3 to secure the point.
KU tied the match at 1-1 before ISU regained control. Cabezas improved to 11-2 in singles action with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over Julia Deming. Then Naklo won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles over Smagina.
Kadleckova finished the match with a 7-6, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles and the Cyclones celebrated the extension of their home win streak, which dates back to the last match of the 2019 season.
Cancini's doubles victory tied her with former teammate Annabella Bonadonna for the school record with 159 overall career wins.
The Cyclones ended a 10-match losing streak to the Jayhawks with the victory and avenged a 4-3 non-conference loss earlier this season.
The Cyclones return to the courts Friday, April 9 with the Oklahoma road swing. ISU faces Oklahoma on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by Oklahoma State on Sunday at 11 a.m.
