AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State picked up four victories outdoors at the Longhorn Invitational on Saturday. The group, made up entirely of student-athletes who only had outdoor-only eligibility in 2020-21, saw many strong performances and personal bests at Mike A. Myers Track.
Two-time All-American Vlad Pavlenko got ISU's first win of the outdoor season in the men's hammer throw. ISU's school record holder in the event, Pavlenko's four legal throws were the four best of the event, as he recorded a winning-effort of 212-2 (64.67m). In his Iowa State debut, Peter Kenn (a graduate transfer from Appalachian State), finished third with a best effort of 184-2 (56.14m) coming in the fourth round.
Abby Caldwell started her season with a win and a personal best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The seventh-year senior got the win in 10:19.00, just edging her previous personal best of 10:19.21 ran at the 2015 Payton Jordan Invitational. In the men's steeplechase, David Too showed off his versatility to the ISU lineup with a second-place finish posting a personal best 8:55.69. The time allows him to enter the ISU all-time top-10 in tenth.
Scott Fuchs, making his Iowa State debut in the men's javelin, showed what he can contribute with a big personal best of 216-3 (65.92m) to finish second on Saturday. In his first competition since the 2019 NCAA Division III Championships when he was at Beloit College, all five of Fuchs' legal throws were over 200 feet and over his previous PR of 198-2 (60.41m). His 216-3 ranks No. 4 in ISU history.
Eric Fogltanz marked his return to Cardinal & Gold with a victory, with the five-time All-American taking the 400-meter hurdles in 51.87. Another All-American, Daniel Nixon, was the winner for ISU in the 800-meter dash, crossing first in 1:50.37.
The men's 1,500-meter run saw the season debut of Iowa State's two-time defending Athlete of the Year Edwin Kurgat. The nine-time All-American, running at his shortest individual race distance, was strong en route to finishing second in 3:48.48.
