COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Iowa State men had a big first day of the NCAA Track & Field Championships West Preliminaries, with four Cyclones booking tickets to Eugene Wednesday at E.B. Cushing Stadium. Wesley Kiptoo and Edwin Kurgat took care of business in the 10,000m, while Vlad Palvenko made his second-straight Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw, while Scott Fuchs made some history for ISU in the javelin.
Temperatures in the mid-80s and humidity roughly in the same ballpark did not change Kiptoo's strategy, as he immediately went to the front and did not look back. Only Arkansas' Emmanuel Cheboson tried to go with him, but the Razorback was dropped within the first mile and Kiptoo was able to ease things down and take care of business in a track and meet-record 28:50.11, saving plenty of energy for Friday night's 5,000-meter run.
Edwin Kurgat will be in his third-straight NCAA Outdoor Championships, his first at 10,000 meters as he was able to be near the front of a big secondary group to take fourth place on the evening in 29:11.05. Despite not advancing, Thomas Pollard had a strong effort in 19th in 29:47.23.
Fuchs took care of business on his first throw, uncorking the second-best throw of his career of 230-2 (70.16m) to move into the early lead and leave no doubt as to his status of going to Eugene. After a foul on his second throw, Fuchs finished with a solid third throw of 211-7 (64.50m), but the first one was more than enough to secure his trip to Eugene in two weeks, the first of his Division I career. He earned Division III All-America honors during his time at Beloit College. Fuchs is ISU's first NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifier in the men's javelin since Mike Brennen in 1986.
For Pavlenko, any of his three throws on the day would have been enough to secure his second-straight trip to the NCAA Championships, as his first throw of 217-8 (66.36m) was good enough for fourth after one round. After a second throw of 214-5 (65.37m), Pavlenko finished his day on a strong note, getting his best throw of the day at 221-6 (67.53m) to take seventh and secure another trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
In the first round races, the Cyclones were able to advance five of their six competitors to Friday's quarterfinal rounds. In the men's 800m run, the Cyclones went 4-for-5, with Festus Lagat leading the way with the fastest time in the field at 1:46.99. Also advancing in the 800m was Jason Gomez (1:47.93), Roshon Roomes (1:48.95) and Alex Lomong (1:49.41). In the men's 400m hurdles, Eric Fogltanz ran to a season-best 50.65 to advance as the fastest timed qualifier.
