UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania – Iowa State (4-1) finished its weekend at the Penn State Classic on a winning note, taking down Oregon State (1-4) 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-18) Saturday evening at Rec Hall. The Cyclones got a strong effort in the attack (.318 hitting as a team) and in defense (OSU hit .122 with ISU recording 9.5 total blocks).
Leading the way in victory was Eleanor Holthaus, who had a double-double of 10 kills at .364 hitting and 11 digs. Kenzie Mantz had nine kills at .421 hitting, while Annie Hatch also had nine kills. In defense, Marija Popovic had 12 digs, while Holthaus had five blocks.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Oregon State 20
Iowa State attacked efficiently early, with three early kills from Annie Hatch and two on two swings from Candelaria Herrera helping build a 10-5 advantage. Hatch continued to be a reliable and versatile option in attack, as her consecutive kills moved the advantage up to 17-10. Despite OSU holding off the Cyclones' first four attempts at set point, the Cyclones eventually cashed in on a kill from Kenzie Mantz at 25-20, finishing off a first frame with the Cyclones hitting .355 as a team.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 Oregon State 21
Hatch continued to find a way to make a difference, this time behind the service line, as she ran off four-straight points to put the Cyclones ahead 8-4. In her first action of the season, Avery Rhodes came off the bench to fire two kills, combine with Mantz on a block and provide an assist for an Eleanor Holthaus kill, all part of a 7-0 run that expanded the ISU lead to 15-6. The Cyclones got ahead 10 at 17-7 on a Brooke Andersen ace, but OSU ran off the next six points to get within four. The Beavers tied the set up at 21-21 on a Kateryna Tkachenko kill, but ISU ran off the next three to bring up set point, which was converted on first asking with a Mantz kill at 25-21.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 Oregon State 18
ISU pieced together a 4-0 run to break open the set in the Cyclones' favor, 10-6. Oregon State made a couple of small incursions to get within two at 15-13 and 19-17, but Iowa State was able to resist and keep the advantage in the final frame. Hatch and Rhodes combined for a block to re-up the lead to four at 21-17, which was the breathing room ISU ended to close it out. Holthaus got her 10th kill of the night to wrap up the third set and the match, 25-18.
Player of the Match
Eleanor Holthaus. The senior did a little bit of everything en route to the Cyclone sweep. She led the attack with 10 kills at .364 hitting percentage, while also having 11 digs and five blocks.
