AMES, Iowa – No. 25 Iowa State (17-8, 8-3 Big 12) dropped just the third conference match of the season against Kansas State (13-10, 4-6 Big 12) in four sets (25-17, 13-25, 22-25, 26-28). A record-making crowd of 4,561 set the fifth-largest volleyball crowd total in Hilton history.
There has now been two top-10 setting attendances this season following the third-largest all-time crowd against Iowa.
Jaden Newsome hit career assist No. 2,000 as the setter entered the match with 1,990. Newsome tallied the mark with an Eleanor Holthaus kill in the fourth set.
Holthaus notched a double-double with 15 kills (.333 hitting) and 19 digs, one dig shy of recording her second 20-dig match this season.
Maya Duckworth (11) and Solei Thomas (10) rounded out Cyclones hitting in double figures.
Brooke Stonestreet tallied her ninth match this season with over 20 digs, bringing in her third match with at least 25. The sophomore totaled over 400 season digs (423) and 500 career digs (506) with 25 on the night.
SET ONE
Back-to-back kills by Duckworth put ISU up 6-2 to start the match. K-State rallied back to take a 10-9 lead on an Elena Baka kill while Iowa State responded, running out to eight-straight points to retake the lead 18-12. Kelsey Perry put up four blocks in the set while Holthaus and Duckworth both led with four kills at .500 hitting. The Cyclones kept on the Wildcats, holding them to .073 hitting to take the set by a score of 25-17.
SET TWO
Iowa State attack errors aided in Kansas State taking an 8-0 scoring run and an early lead. An Annie Hatch kill capped a rally to inch toward K-State's lead of 12-9. Attacking errors continued as ISU tallied nine in the set while K-State hit .438 to tie up the match with an advantage of 25-13.
SET THREE
Both sides kept the score within one to begin the third. A solo block by Holthaus fired up the crowd as Hatch followed up the play with a kill to lead 11-9. A block by Engelbrecht and Thomas, the eighth Cyclone block of the match, stretched the lead to 18-14 before the Wildcats tied it back up with an ace. A battle broke out from there with back-and-forth action, but K-State prevailed, 25-22.
SET FOUR
A Stonestreet ace sent the Cyclones to grab three-straight points to lead 7-3. Holthaus continued adding kills to her total after notching 10, sending over three during a run of five to take a lead of 15-7. Iowa State continued the attack, hitting over .300 to lead by 10 at 20-10. K-State set on to start their comeback, eventually bringing the score to 21-18. The Wildcats continued to rally, fighting off three set points to tie it at 24 and extend the set. K-State went on to take the match with a kill while holding Iowa State to .089 hitting in the fourth, 28-26.
