AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (17-9, 8-4 Big 12) dropped the match to No. 1 Texas (18-1, 11-1 Big 12) in three sets (23-25, 19-25, 19-25). Texas outhit Iowa State .379-.169 despite the Longhorns tallying 14 attack errors on Wednesday night.
Maya Duckworth was the lone Cyclone in double digits as the freshman turned in her 15th performance with 10 or more kills. Duckworth ended the night with 10 kills and a solo block.
Eleanor Holthaus hit a milestone as she now holds the school record of most matches played with 130 on her Iowa State career.
SET ONE
Texas took the first point, but Iowa State answered with two-straight blocks followed by freshman kills by Duckworth and Kelsey Perry to lead 6-3. Texas took the lead back at 10-9 before both sides continued to match each other on the scoreboard. Iowa State then went up by two at 14-12 on a solo block by Duckworth. The matching score trend continued up to 19-19 before the Longhorns took a run of three. The Cyclones hit two kills to bring the lead within one at 21-22. With Texas at set point, Alexis Engelbrecht fired off a kill and the Longhorns recorded an attack error to put the score at 24-23. A kill by Logan Eggleston came next to seal the set 25-23.
SET TWO
Texas led 9-5 as Perry hit her third kill at perfect hitting. Morgan Brandt brought in an ace next to trim the deficit to two at 9-7. The Longhorns began to pull away, stretching their lead to 14-9 before Solei Thomas halted their run with a kill. UT tallied its 10th attack error of the match as ISU again came within two at 15-13. The Longhorns benefitted off Cyclone attack errors to lead 21-15 for an Iowa State timeout. Texas outhit Iowa State .360-.077 in the set to take it 25-19.
SET THREE
Perry hit her fourth kill, still at perfect hitting, to put the Cyclones on the board. Texas recorded its seventh service error followed by Kate Shannon serving up an ace to tie it at 5s. Iowa State kept in it as Duckworth sent over kill No. 10 to put the score at 15-13. The Longhorns found 20 points on a Molly Phillips kill while ISU held 16. Texas hit at .462 to find match point and went on to seal the match on a kill, 25-19.
