GAINSEVILLE, Fla. – No. 6-seed Iowa State (20-11, 10-6 Big 12) moved on to the NCAA Tournament Second Round with the five-set victory over FGSU (26-7, 13-4 ASUN) by set scores of 25-14, 25-19, 23-25, 16-25, 15-12. The Cyclones solidify the first 20-win season since 2018 while head Coach Christy Johnson Lynch claims the 350th victory of her career.
Iowa State took a 2-0 match lead as the Cyclones found efficiency in hitting at .533 in the first and .310 in the second. FGCU came back to tie the match and force a fifth, just as the Eagles did last season against Texas Tech in the first round of the 2021 tournament. ISU shifted the momentum back in the fifth set to advance to the second round for the first time since 2017 and the 11th time in program history.
Eleanor Holthaus kept the Cyclones in it as the Eagles attempted the comeback as the senior ended with 19 kills on the night, achieving the total at .395 hitting. Holthaus had career double-double No. 31 adding 10 digs to add to her stat line also including three blocks and an ace.
Maya Duckworth tallied 13 kills, eight digs, two blocks and two aces in the victory. Solei Thomas followed with 12 at .450 hitting for three Cyclones with over 10 kills.
Alexis Engelbrecht and Kelsey Perry led blockers with four blocks each. Engelbrecht now holds the eighth-highest block assist season total in program history with 116. Brooke Stonestreet was big on defense, having her 11th 20-plus dig match of the season while serving to two aces.
SET ONE
Iowa State started out on a 5-0 run and kept rolling from there. Duckworth led the set with five kills at an efficiency over .400 while six Cyclones sent over a kill, including setter Morgan Brandt. ISU held the Eagles to .189 hitting to take the first 25-14.
SET TWO
Engelbrecht delivered her fourth kill at .800 hitting to put the lead at 5-2. FGCU came back to tie it at 7-7 while both sides kept within three points of each other. ISU began to break away as Thomas hit her eighth kill with zero errors at .800. The Cyclones kept on their attack, remaining hitting over .400 to take a 2-0 lead by a set score of 25-19.
SET THREE
Two-straight aces gave the Eagles their first lead at 7-6 while both teams continued to match each other on the scoreboard for the remainder of the set. Florida Gulf Coast was the first to find set point at 24-23, going on to force a fourth set. Duckworth and Thomas both entered double figures in the set.
SET FOUR
Holthaus put down her 10th kill to get the Cyclones of the board. The Eagles went on to build a lead of 13-6 as they hit a run of five. Brandt then brought ISU back within four with another setter kill at 16-12. FGCU pulled away to take the set by a score of 24-16 led by Lily Felts with 13 kills.
SET FIVE
Iowa State set out to seal the win going up 5-0. Kelsey Perry put ISU up 8-4 with a kill to cause the sides to switch sides. The Cyclones stayed ahead to end the match up 15-12 on a Thomas kill.
