Cyclones Secure Cy-Hawk Trophy

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (3-1, 0-0 Big 12) topped Iowa (1-3, 0-2 Big Ten) by a score of 156-144. This marks the second-straight season the Cyclones knocked off the Hawkeyes, the first time ISU has recorded consecutive dual wins over the Hawkeyes since the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons.

The win also clinched the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series for the Iowa State Athletics Department in 2022-23, with the Cyclones moving ahead by an unassailable 13-6 advantage. Iowa State clinched the trophy for the second-straight athletics year, the first since the 2013-14 and 2014-15 athletics years that Iowa State has retained the trophy.

The Cyclones kept up with the trend of breaking records and improving career-best times. Brinley Horras claimed two event wins in the 1000 free and 500 free. By notching a time of 10:01.95 in the 1000 free, she moved up to No. 2 on the all-time top-performers list and marks the third fastest time in school history. In the 500 free, she touched the wall at 4:53.29. Madison Rundell followed behind Horras in the 1000 free, landing in third place to record a time of 10:10.25. She now sits at No. 11 on the top performers list.

"This is the best we've seen Brinley swim, so it has been a long time coming for her," head coach Duane Sorenson said.

Carley Caughron won the 50 free event, touching the wall at 23.28. With her new personal best time, she is currently No. 9 on the top performers list. She followed up the 100 free with a second-place finish and time of 50.83. She claimed the No. 12 spot on the top performers list. Elizabeth Richardson and Alaina Breitbach both took home event titles. Richardson recorded a 1:58.72 in the 200 back and Breitbach posted a time of 2:16.54 in the 200 breast.

"With Liz and Alaina's wins, that momentum really changed everything for us," Sorenson said. "They both really came through for us."

Joscelyn Buss recorded two NCAA Zone Championship cuts at the meet. She led the team on the 3-meter boards with a score of 298.30, placing second. Freshmen Ally Blumenfeld placed fifth with a score of 271.60 and Kate Mitchell waseighth with 257.80. Buss had a third-place finish with 292.30 on the 1-meter boards. Mitchell and Blumenfeld placed right next to each other with Mitchell in fifth (260.55) and Blumenfeld in sixth (253.35).

Lucia Rizzo earned a victory in the 200 IM, where she raced to a time of 2:01.31. In the 200 fly, Rizzo (second, 2:01.21) and Winter Craig (third, 2:01.84) both improved their PR's and remain in the same standing on the top performers list, with Rizzo at No. 3 and Craig at No. 4. Rizzo recorded an additional PR in the 100 fly, swimming a time of 55.19. Her performance landed her No. 9 on the list.

Ashley Bengtson improved her career time to 1:49.69 in the 200 free, moving up to No. 8 on the top performers list with her second-place finish. Gabrielle LePine placed second in the 100 breast, touching the wall at 1:02.23. Her time landed on the No. 8 spot for the top performers list, which she has made for a second time this season. Trinity Kay recorded a new PR in the 100 back with a time of 55.75 to make the top performers list at No. 15.

"I was pleased with these great races and fast times. We knew this was going to be tight and we came out on top," Sorenson said.

ON DECK: Georgia Diving Invite and Double Dual against UNI and West Virginia
The divers will first travel to Athens, Georgia to compete in the Georgia Diving Invite on Jan. 3-5. The Cyclones will play host for their first double dual of the season against UNI and their first Big 12 matchup, West Virginia. The teams will go head-to-head on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. Admission to Beyer Pool is free and open to the public.
