CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Iowa State (4-1, 0-0 Big 12) split two games on the final day of the Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic, falling in a one-run contest to Drake (2-3, 0-0 MVC), 7-6, before fending off a late rally from UNI (2-3, 0-0 MVC) for a 5-4 victory.
Cyclone pitcher Saya Swain struck out a school record 17 batters in Iowa State's win over the Panthers, breaking the previous single-game best of 14 set by Brianna Weilbacher in 2017 (vs. Seton Hall).
Carli Spelhaug (4-of-7, 2 2B, HR) and Milaysia Ochoa (4-of-8, 1 2B, 2 RBI) highlighted the day at the plate for Iowa State.
Game One – ISU 6, Drake 7
Iowa State dropped a heartbreaker to Drake, 7-6, to begin the day.
Ochoa led the Cyclones at the plate, going 3-of-4 with an RBI and a run scored. ISU stranded 10 runners and committed four errors in the game, including two in the seventh inning.
Drake started fast, capitalizing on an ISU error to cross two runs in the opening frame. ISU would get one back in the bottom half of the inning on a throwing error from the Bulldog catcher. The Cyclones threatened for more, but the Drake center fielder robbed Camille Marin of a three-run homer to end the inning.
All was quiet until Angelina Allen and Ochoa knocked back-to-back doubles to tie the game at 2-2 in the third inning. A bases-loaded walk gave ISU its first lead of the contest at 3-2.
Drake tied the game in the third and took the lead in the fourth with some aggressive base running.
The Cyclones regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a well-placed bunt from Sarah Tyree. Drake would rally, however, capitalizing on two Cyclone errors in the seventh to put up a three-spot of its own to hand ISU a 7-6 defeat.
Game Two – ISU 5, UNI 4
Swain (2-0) was dominant from the get-go, striking out nine of the first 11 batters she saw.
Iowa State struck first with four runs in the third inning, highlighted by a three-run blast from Alesia Ranches, her second home run of the weekend. Carli Spelhaug, who finished 2-of-2 at the plate and drew two walks, added a run to the Cyclone lead with a solo shot in the fourth to make it, 5-0.
UNI cut into Iowa State's lead with a three-run sixth inning, followed by one run in the seventh. Karlie Charles, who entered in relief of Swain in the final inning, retired three of the four batters she saw to halt the Panther rally and seal the victory for ISU.
