AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State gymnastics team had a record number of student-athletes named to the Academic All-Big 12 Gymnastics Team. The Cyclones led the conference with 14 gymnasts selected.
Eleven Cyclones made the first team, with both Kelsey Boychuk (Marketing) and Madelyn Langkamp (Kinesiology and Health) making their third-straight appearance. Ariana Orrego earned her second-straight first team appearance, and third all-time after making it in 2019.
Five of the honorees earned their second-straight first team appearance. Phoebe Turner (Sociology), Laura Cooke (Kinesiology and Health), Loganne Basuel (Kinesiology and Health), Natalie Horowitz (Event Management), and Andrea Maldonado (Journalism and Mass Communication) all were selected last year as well. Turner also earned Second Team honors in 2020.
Maya Ford (Technical Communication), Ana Palacios (Genetics), and Kaia Parker (Public Relations) were all named to the first team for the first time in their careers. Second team honorees included Makayla Maxwell (Kinesiology and Health), Maddie Diab (Marketing), and Meixi Semple (Marketing). Maxwell has previously been selected to the Second Team in 2020 and First Team in 2021. Diab was selected to the First Team in 2021.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher, either cumulative or the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Cyclones have their last home meet of the year this Friday at 6:30 p.m. when they welcome the No. 19 Iowa Hawkeyes as part of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.
