AMES, Iowa -Â Iowa State finished its 16th season under Jay Ronayne ranked No. 25 in the country, marking the fifth-straight season the Cyclones have finished in the top 25. The historic season culminated with ISU's 14th NCAA Regional berth in the last 15 seasons.
Key Storylines
- Iowa State qualified for its 14th NCAA Regional in the last 15 seasons and defeated Western Michigan in the First Round.
- ISU posted its highest regional score in program history, a 196.725, in the Second Round against Florida, Denver and Ohio State.
- Iowa State logged 31 scores of 9.900 or higher, the ninth-most in a season in program history. Maddie Diab led the way with 10 such scores while nine different Cyclones had at least one, which tied for the second-most in school history.
- ISU's highest score of the season (196.875) came at home against Lindenwood. It was the second-highest score of the Ronayne era and tied for 19th-best overall score in school history.
- The Cyclones saw two scores of 10.000 this season from Diab and Makayla Maxwell, the only time in school history that a perfect score has been earned twice in one season.
- Maxwell (vault) and Diab (floor) were both named to the All-Big 12 Gymnastics Team. It marked the third consecutive season a Cyclone has received an All-Big 12 honor and first time since 2015 with two Iowa State gymnasts on the team.Â
- Maxwell earned WCGA Second Team All-America honors on vault after finishing tied for 15th in the nation with an NQS of 9.915.Â
- Diab earned a share of the Big 12 title on floor while Maxwell (silver), along with Sophia Steinmeyer (bronze), notched podium finishes on vault.
- Freshman Hannah Loyim made steady progress as the year went on and competed in the all-around three times. Loyim's best AA score of the season (39.175) came at the NCAA Regional.
- Freshman Josie Bergstrom closed the year with back-to-back career-high 9.900s in the NCAA First and Second Rounds.
- Iowa State competed in front of 3,889 people against Iowa in the Cy-Hawk meet, the largest gymnastics-only crowd in program history.
- Five different Cyclones had a score of 9.900 or higher on floor during the year (Cooke, Diab, An. Maldonado, Orrego, Loyim).
- The Cyclones were hampered by several key injuries just before the season began. Jade Vella-Wright, Phoebe Turner, Madelyn Langkamp, Natalie Horowitz and Emma Ricks all suffered injuries in the preseason and missed the year. Additionally, Addy De Jesus, Alondra Maldonado and Andrea Maldonado suffered season-ending injuries during the year.
- Two Olympians graced the roster this season in Ariana Orrego (Peru) and Marina Gonzalez (Spain). Orrego competed at both the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics while Gonzalez competed in Tokyo, finishing 32nd on floor and 12th in the team standings.Â
- Iowa State boasted one of the most diverse rosters in the nation with gymnasts hailing from nine different countries, including the United States.
