WACO, Texas – Iowa State (22-25, 2-11 Big 12) dropped a tightly-contested pitcher's duel, 1-0, in the series opener against Baylor (27-19, 5-8 Big 12) Friday night inside Getterman Stadium.
Saya Swain earned the start in the circle for the Cyclones, struck out three and allowed no runs before giving way to Ellie Spelhaug (8-16) with a runner aboard and no outs in the fifth. Spelhaug pitched two innings of relief and allowed only two hits but was tagged with the loss after giving up the game's only run.
Baylor's Dariana Orme (12-11) pitched a shutout in which she relied heavily on the defense behind her. The sophomore righty struck out three but induced 10 fly-outs and eight groundouts.
Iowa State scattered four hits in the contest, one each from Angelina Allen, Alesia Ranches, Skyler Ramos and Angelita Fuentes.
Both sides missed multiple scoring opportunities early in the game with ISU stranding three runners in scoring position compared to four by the Bears. Baylor was able to break through in the sixth with the game's only run on an RBI single up the middle.
