WACO, Texas – Iowa State (23-25, 3-11 Big 12) evened the series against Baylor (27-20, 5-9 Big 12) with a 6-1 victory on Saturday afternoon inside Getterman Stadium. The two sides were locked in another pitching battle for most of the game before the Cyclones exploded for five runs in the seventh.
Karlie Charles was fantastic in the circle for Iowa State. The junior tossed five innings, struck out two and allowed no earned runs on just two hits. Ellie Spelhaug (9-16) earned the win, however, after allowing only one hit in a two-inning relief outing.
Iowa State's six runs came on five hits as the Cyclones were able to capitalize on three Baylor errors in the game. Carli Spelhaug scored her 52nd run of the season to move into a tie for third with herself in ISU single season history.
A pair of Cyclone errors and some aggressive Baylor baserunning allowed the home side to cross the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. Iowa State would even the score the next inning when Carli Spelhaug singled, stole second and took third on a Bear error before Angelina Allen sent a chopper to second to plate the run.
All was quiet until the seventh inning when Mikayla Ramos and Milaysia Ochoa began the frame with back-to-back singles. Alesia Ranches moved the runners into scoring position with a perfectly placed sac bunt. Kasey Simpson then sent a chopper to shortstop to bring in the go-ahead run while Ochoa touched home on a Baylor error.
The Cyclones would cross a total of five runs in the final inning which included RBIs from Skyler Ramos, Kaylee Pond and Carli Spelhaug. Baylor would get a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the frame thanks to two ISU errors, but the Cyclones would close the door to seal the win.
