LUBBOCK, Texas – Iowa State had another strong day at the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships with good performances allowing the Cyclones to continue to tally team points and put themselves in position to add to the team total on Sunday.
With eight events scored, the ISU women sit in third place in the team standings with 40 points, while the Cyclone men are in seventh with 25 points.
A hot Saturday ended on Fuller Track under the lights with the steeplechases, with the Cyclones getting 11 points for both the men's and women's team standings. The Cyclone women were guided by Janette Schraft, who brings home the bronze medal with a 10:30.85. Madelynn Hill continued her strong rookie campaign as a steeplechaser with sixth place and a 10:46.83 and Kiki Connell scored in her first Big 12 Outdoor Championships competition in seventh with a 10:54.46.
Both Gable Sieperda and Kelvin Bungei spent time in second place during the men's competition, but were unable to maintain it, though both had top-five finishes to help the ISU cause, with Sieperda fourth in 9:01.06 and Bungei fifth in 9:09.34. In just his second career steeplechase, Nate Mueller brought home two points in seventh with a 9:19.68.
In the heptathlon, Sydney Willits completed her first season a multi-events athlete by scoring for the ISU women. The freshman had a huge day in the three events, beginning with a 20-2 1/2w (6.16m), the second-best mark in the field and her best long jump in a multis competition. She followed that up with a personal best 91-5 (27.87m) in the javelin to be within 32 points of eighth place heading to the 800m. Needing to beat Baylor's Alyssa Miller by around two seconds to move ahead, Willits left no doubt with a personal best 2:30.32, almost nine seconds ahead of her BU rival, to lock up eighth and finish with a score of 5,038 points, the No. 5 mark in ISU heptathlon history.
In prelims action, Iowa State put six entries through to tomorrow's finals. ISU demonstrated its continued strength in the mid-distance races, putting a trio through to the final of the men's 800-meter run. Cebastian Gentil led the way in 1:48.25 today, while Darius Kipyego was seventh in 1:49.26. Peter Smith was the last qualifier through in 1:49.31, only 0.01 seconds ahead of K-State's Travis Hodge. Nehemia Too advanced to the men's 1,500-meter run final, taking sixth on the day in 3:45.23.
ISU was able to get two through the highly-competitive women's 100-meter hurdles, with Kaylyn Hall running a personal best 13.22 to be sixth, and Katarina Vlahovic clocking a 13.37 to be the final qualifier.
Other notable performances on the day included Thai Thompson becoming the seventh man in ISU history to go over 7,000 points in the decathlon, using four personal bests to take ninth with 7,001 points. While Zakiyah Amos was unable to crack a competitive 400-meter dash final, she posted a huge personal best of 53.81 to finish 12th and move into fifth in ISU history for the event.
