CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Iowa State sophomore Thasaporn Naklo's season came to an end Tuesday with a heartbreaking loss in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship. She fell to NC State's Abigail Renchili, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 0-6.
Naklo had match point leading 5-4 and 40-love when a debilitating injury allowed Renchili to rally and take the second set, 7-5. Naklo valiantly battled through the injury but was unable to fully recover from the injury.
"A lot of emotions and words can be felt after today's match," head coach Boomer Saia said. "Even with severe cramping, Taew stayed and fought when many would have yielded mid match. In sports, there are a lot of situations that define the character of a player. The way she handled herself in the most difficult of situations today tells me everything I need to know about her. While I know this one hurts, I couldn't be more proud of how she represented herself, our team and Iowa State University."
Naklo fell behind 5-2 in the opening set but rallied back to tie it at 5-5 before eventually taking the set 7-6 in a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Naklo trailed 2-0, but won seven of the next eight points to move her within a set of advancing.
Naklo, the first player in school history to advance to the NCAA Singles Championship, finishes her season with a 23-13 record.
