EUGENE, Oregon – For the first time in Iowa State women's track and field history, the Cyclones have an All-American in the women's discus. The honor went to Emily March, who went big by getting First Team All-America honors with an eighth place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.
March, who was ISU's first NCAA Championships qualifier in the women's discus since 2003, got there via an eighth-place finish with her best throw of the being a 178-3 (53.35m).
The eighth-place finish by March also scored one team point for Iowa State, with the Cyclones finishing tied for 62nd place.
March was among six of the 12 in flight one to scratch on her first throw of the day. The Cyclone was able to settle down and compose herself on her second toss, firing a 173-10 (52.99m) to sit in fifth among flight one contestants after two throws. March did have a little more left in her on her third prelims throw, as she fired a 178-1 (54.29m) to sit fourth after the first flight.
The waiting game then began if she could find a way into the top-9. With an assist from Mother Nature with a rainstorm coming in between flights to dampen the ring, March was able to get three more throws, as she sat in seventh after flight two, with five of the nine finalists advancing out of the first flight and five of the nine coming from the Big 12.
March took advantage of the chance to continue competition with her fourth throw becoming her new best of the day at 178-3 (54.35m) to solidify her hold of seventh. Her fifth throw of 174-0 (53.05m) kept her in seventh heading to the final round. March fouled her final throw of the day, but by that time eighth place was assured and her First Team All-America honors.
