AMES, Iowa – Iowa State gymnast Ana Irene Palacios is set to compete in the 2022 Pan-American Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Palacios will be representing her home country of Guatemala while competing as an all-around individual competitor throughout the artistic gymnastics portion of the Pan-American Championships taking place from July 14th through the 17th.
Last season, Palacios only competed in one meet for the Cyclones as a freshman. In the NIU Quad, she competed on the vault and earned a score of 9.700.
Prior to ISU, Palacios competed for the Guatemalan Gymnastics Federation national team and has represented Guatemala in international competitions since joining the team in 2015. In 2019, Palacios took home three gold medals after placing first in the all-around competition, vault and bars while competing at the Central American Championships.
The Pan-American Championships are split into three different gymnastic focuses. The trampoline focus (June 26-28), rhythmic (July 7-10) and artistic (July 14-17). Palacios will only be competing in the artistic portion of the Pan-American Championships that will focus on the vault, beam, bars and floor.
The Pan-American Championships are a qualifying meet for the upcoming 2022 World Championships that will take place in October.
At the conclusion of the Pan-American Championships, five teams will qualify for the 2022 World Championships along with the top eleven all-around individual competitors.
