PARAMUS, N.J. – Iowa State sophomore Luke Gutschewski is in a five-way tie for first place after the opening round of the 122nd U.S. Amateur. Gutschewski played the opening round at the Ridgewood Country Club, while he will play the second round on Tuesday at Arcola Country Club.
Gutschewski, and the four others tied atop the leaderboard, shot a 68 in the opening round. All five on top the leaderboard played Ridgewood Country Club in the opening round. Gutschewski, starting on the front nine, was even at the turn with a birdie on the ninth hole. On the back nine, Gutschewski was three-under par. He birdied the 11th, 15th and 17th holes.
Tuesday will mark the final round of stroke play. The top 64 players in the field of 312 will advance to match play, which starts on Wednesday. The round of 64 for match play will be on Aug. 17, while round of 32 action will be Aug. 18 The quarterfinals will be Aug. 19, with the semifinals on Aug. 20. The championship match, over 36 holes, will be on Aug. 21.
Gutschewski will tee off at 11:25 a.m. (CT) Tuesday at Arcola Country Club. He will start his round on the back nine.
Under Iowa State Head Coach Andrew Tank, Gutschewski is the ninth different Cyclone to play in the U.S. Amateur. Most recently, Frank Lindwall played in the event in 2021, while Tripp Kinney and Lachlan Barker participated in 2020.
